On Backlist Titles

NEW YORK, NY/10/21/04—Simon & Schuster has named B.J. Gabriel, formerly director of national accounts, to a new post as vice president of sales development. His new mission will be to promote sales for the company’s large backlist of more than 50,000 titles.

Gabriel will research, identify, and capitalize on sales opportunities for the backlist. The company believes a changing consumer market and retail environment may make sales opportunities for backlist titles more attractive, and can help S&S distinguish itself from the competition, according to president Larry Norton.

Today, Simon & Schuster publishes a wide variety of bestsellers across all formats and has more than 50,000 backlist titles and 52 Pulitzer Prize winners. In 1999, Simon & Schuster published 59 New York Times bestsellers, including Bob Woodward’s Shadow; Barbara Delinsky’s Coast Road and Lake News; Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Hearts in Atlantis; Frank McCourt’s ‘Tis; and Iyanla Vanzant’s Yesterday I Cried. By June 2000, Simon & Schuster already had 31 titles on The New York Times Best Sellers list, including Dave Eggers’ A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Mary Higgins Clark’s We’ll Meet Again, and Jeffery Deaver’s The Devil’s Teardrop.
