A daughter’s grisly murder, a father’s loss, and a slew of shady characters will grip the reader from the first page to the last. Tim Rackley, a committed U.S. Marshal, also a devoted husband and father, is suddenly thrust into a parent’s worst nightmare when his young daughter is brutally killed on her birthday. His conflicted and twisting emotions, the painful aftermath of the murder and its effect on his relationship with his wife, reads authentically and lends a deeper intensity to the novel. While dealing with morally complex issues on the interplay between law and justice, the events that transpire do take on a somewhat fantastical angle but they just serve to imbue this novel with a greater can’t-put-it-down factor. Added to the mix are the camaraderie and rivalries of the various law enforcement and political forces that are key players in this book. The real allure, however, is in Rackley, an intriguing and flawed hero.
