"Threaded throughout this fable are gems of truth, some harder to divine than others . . ."

A glowing brand, sprigs of mint and singing bones capsulate the myths and magic of love woven into Harem, a tapestry of fantasy written by Dora Levy Mossanen. Placed in ancient Persia, an era of palaces and bazaars, harems and eunuchs, potions and poisons, this fable tantalizes the readers’ senses with its rich hues that contemporary fiction often lacks.

The women in this story are as exotic as the setting: Rebekah with a crimson brand between her breasts; Gold Dust, Rebekah’s daughter, who is born with singing bones and eyes that cannot cry; and Raven, Gold Dust’s daughter, who is born without color or soul.

Born into a society that values women as only sexual commodities, they use their beauty, magic and sexuality to rise above poverty, cruelty and oppression. Rebekah becomes a whore to feed her child and uses her sexual talents to gain entrance for Gold Dust into the harem. Gold Dust wins the favor of the Shah with her sexuality and singing bones, and Raven, destined to become Queen, sets out to seduce her own father to obtain her goal.

Threaded throughout this fable are gems of truth, some harder to divine than others, but none stronger than the one Rebekah learns when Gold Dust’s bones stop singing and she realizes her daughter will die without true love.
