Time Warner Award to Honor

the Late Sara Ann Freed

NEW YORK, NY/2/10/04—The Mysterious Press, an imprint of Time Warner, has created the Sara Ann Freed Memorial Award for a first mystery novel, offering a $10,000 advance for publication by the imprint.

Sasra Ann, 57, who died of complications from leukemia in June 2003, was editor-in-chief of Mysterious Press and the senior editor at Warner Books. Freed worked with several prominent mystery authors, including Marcia Muller, James Patterson and Kelly Lange. She also helped Patricia Cornwell turn her fictional medical examiner, Kay Scarpetta, into the heroine of a best-selling series of books. In 1999, Freed received the Ellery Queen Award from the Mystery Writers of America.

CEO Larry Kirshbaum said, “Sara Ann Freed nurtured many outstanding mystery writers at the beginning of their careers. I can think of no better way to honor her memory than the establishment of this award whose purpose is to launch the career of a talented new mystery writer.”

Submissions will be accepted from April 1 through July 1 only, for publication in September 2005. Details are available at MysteriousPress.com.
