R& L Acquires

Cowley Publications

LANHAM, MD/1/15/07—Rowman & Littlefield has acquired Cowley Publications, owned for 28 years by the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, a monastic community for men in the Episcopal Church. Cowley’s entire backlist of 150 books has been acquired and its name will be licensed to Rowman & Littlefield as a separate imprint.

The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group is one of the largest and fastest growing independent publishers and distributors in North America.

The company publishes more than twenty imprints in virtually all fields in the humanities and social sciences. The 31-year-old company publishes more than 1,000 new academic, reference, and general interest books and six journals. It has recently grown its religious lines with the purchase of two other small religious publishers, Sheed & Ward and Jason Aronson within the past few years.

R&L also owns National Book Network, North America’s second largest distributor of independent trade book publishers. NBN recently created two new divisions: Biblio Distribution for small trade publishers and FaithWorks for CBA publishers. The company employs 530 people in locations in Lanham, Maryland (headquarters); Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania (distribution center); New York City; Toronto; Boulder, Colorado; Chicago; and Walnut Creek, California.
