Hodgman Named

Executive Editor

At Houghton Mifflin

NEW YORK, NY/7/30/07–George Hodgman has been named vice president and senior executive editor of the Houghton Mifflin adult trade group, effective September 10. Hodgman replaces Eamon Dolan, HM’s v-p and editor-in-chief, who has departed to join Penguin Group USA in a similar capacity. Prior to joining HM, Hodgman served as executive editor at Henry Holt and in a senior editorial role at Simon & Schuster.

The executive appointment comes immediately after the July announcement that Houghton Mifflin has acquired the Harcourt Education, Harcourt Trade and Greenwood-Heinemann divisions from Reed Elsevier. The addition of Harcourt Trade to Houghton Mifflin’s rich library of literature and reference titles will create a preeminent publisher with one of the industry’s most distinguished lists of authors.

Among titles to Hodgman’s editorial credit are Kevin Boyle’s National Book Award winner Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age; and Danielle Trussoni’s memoir Falling through the Earth; and Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields. Prior to joining Holt, Hodgman was at Simon & Schuster. Hodgman is set to start in HM’s New York office on September 10.

The Houghton Mifflin Trade and Reference Division publishes adult, juvenile, and reference books, including 28 Pulitzer Prize winners, 9 National Book Award winners, 11 recipients of Caldecott Medals, and 10 recipients of Newbery Medals.
