Launches New Christian Line
NEW YORK, NY/10/13/03—Harlequin’s Steeple Hill imprint is developing a new program dedicated to publishing inspirational Christian women’s fiction, depicting characters who learn important lessons about trust and the power of faith. The stories will promote strong family values and high moral standards.
Harlequin, the pioneer of “chick lit” for young women, will use its experience in developing the successful chick lit line, Red Dress Ink, to capture the Christian market. Steeple Hill senior editor Joan Marlow Golan, who helped establish Red Dress, will oversee the new line and Red Dress associate editor Farrin Jacobs is a member of the five-person team launching the new line. Steeple Hill editor Krista Stoever also will be involved.
Although the faith element is central to the stories, the degree of religiousness can vary. But the line will forbid premarital sex or graphic violence, and will minimize sexual desire. The Steeple Hill inspirational line will also cross over to appeal to chick lit readers. Editors will be looking for a certain edgy voice that deals with reality. In addition to books about singles, the line will include stories about married women dealing with family life, a category Golan has dubbed “Mom lit.”
