June 27 – July 4, 2010 Edition Stephen Hawking to Publish New Work at Bantam Dell

NEW YORK, NY/AUTHORLINK NEWS/ June 28, 2010–Stephen Hawking has drawn on the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime to address the ultimate mysteries of the universe in a new book, THE GRAND DESIGN, co-written with Leonard Mlodinow, which Bantam will publish on September 7.

Fusing many different strands of scientific theory, the authors seek to answer the unfathomable questions that were once the province of philosophers, among them: Why is there something rather than nothing? Why do we exist? Do we have free will? What is the “Grand Design” that made it possible for us to have found a home in what may be the one universe out of a vast number where human life is possible?

And perhaps the biggest question of all: Did our universe need a creator?

According to Hawking, we are very close to an understanding, not just of the workings of our universe, but of its very beginnings. Drawing on forty years of Hawking’s own research and a recent series of extraordinary astronomical observations and theoretical breakthroughs, Hawking and Mlodinow examine the evidence for the existence of a “unified theory”–a single theory that can describe and explain all the forces of nature.

Hawking, one of the greatest scientists and thinkers of our time, was for thirty years Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and the author of the worldwide publishing phenomenon A Brief History of Time, among other books. Physicist Leonard Mlodinow, who teaches at California Institute of Technology, is the author, most recently, of the bestselling The Drunkard’s Walk.
