All great chefs have their secrets. Some are delicious, and some are deadly, as we learn in Basil Instinct. Edgar Award-nominated author Shelley Costa’s second book in her Miracolo Restaurant mystery series, is a delightful summer read just out from Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster.
A top-secret society of female chefs, Belfiere has marinated in mystery for two centuries. With its members-only tattoo and code of omerta (code of silence), this is not your grandmother’s cooking club. Or so Eve Angelotta thinks until her own nonna—Miracolo’s feisty owner, Maria Pia—is chosen to join their shadowy ranks.
In this Authorlink audio interview, Shelley Costa talks about the unlikely way the mystery series came about, with the first book, You Cannoli Die Once. She discusses the craft of writing as a source of deep happiness, and advises authors to “stay open” to new ways to think about their work. She also gives us a look into the story line for Basil Instinct, where there are plenty of “crazies in waiting.”
Suspicious from the start (and none too thrilled at picturing her grandmother with a tattoo), Eve enlists her cousin Landon and sexy lawyer Joe Beck to uncover possible murderous designs on Maria Pia. But the prosciutto hits the fan when Eve’s sous chef turns up dead with Belfiere’s B emblazoned on her wrist…If this culinary cult wants to play hunger games, Eve will sharpen her sleuthing instincts and her knives to make sure Nonna is the last chef standing.
