” . . .grips hard from the get-go and never lets up until the final page.”
Omar Amante seems a wimp who got his position thanks to family influence rather than talent. Everything changes when they’re assigned to investigate the discovery of a dismembered corpse at the bottom of a lake. Who hated former star police detective David Sarac with such a passion to carve him up into chunks with a chainsaw?
There seems to be a direct connection with a gangland shoot-out on Skarpö Island months earlier, an incident which left several cops and gangsters dead and Sarac in a nursing home. What happened to cause him to escape from his enforced retreat? Could Sarac have been pursuing a powerful political figure, and if so, who and why? Another survivor of the Skarpö shootings casts new light on the case, one that leaves Julia wondering who she can trust. Amante seems far more competent than she first supposed, but he has his inner demons. Can she rely on him or is he playing a devious game with her and the rest of the police?
As the body count rises the trail leads to a manipulative and cold-blooded murderer who’ll stop at nothing to protect the truth. Julia must risk all in approaching the one person who may have the answers – and if she’s wrong, it could prove fatal.
Ultimatum is another fine novel in the Swedish thriller tradition that grips hard from the get-go and never lets up until the final page.
