NEW YORK, NY/04/22/2004—Doug Pepper will depart Crown/Random House to become president and publisher of McClelland & Stewart in Toronto, effective May 31. McClelland’s current long-time publisher, Douglas Gibson, will stay with the company and will publish under an eponymous imprint.

NEW YORK, NY/04/21/2004—Riverhead says it may not replace Amy Hertz, who was one of the publisher’s founding editors and a key developer of several bestsellers. Some say Hertz’ departure will hurt the company’s revenues. But the imprint’s co-publisher Julie Grau indicated there may be other ways of producing the kind of titles Hertz edited without hiring a replacement for her.

DK Restructuring Sees Lang Depart

NEW YORK, NY/04/20/2004—Chuck Lang, senior vice president of publishing at Dorling Kindersley (DK) for the past 11 years, has left the company, reportedly as part of a company-wide restructuring that has affected both the UK and US publishing operations. According to president Bill Barry, DK has reduced its publishing categories to four adult and two children’s imprints. Initially established in 1974 as a book packager and then a publisher in its own right, DK is now part of the internationally renowned Penguin Group, the second-largest English-language trade book publisher in the world.
