Words without Borders, the online magazine for international literature, announces the release of its August issue, “A New North: Contemporary Writing from Finland.”
The writers in this month’s issue present a compelling portrait of Finnish literature, many of them appearing here for the first time in English translation thanks to the efforts of guest editor and translator Lola Rogers.
Susan Harris, Words without Borders editorial director, said of the issue, “Finnish literature has received less attention in the English-speaking world than it merits. We’re delighted to introduce these rich and vibrant works to our readers.”
In Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläinen’s “Letters to Lethe,” the author imagines a life where one’s only memories are of the future.
In an extract from award-winning novelist Sofi Oksanen’s When the Doves Disappeared,the writer pens a vivid recreation of the bombing of Talinn in 1940.
And Leena Krohn sends a writer to the reading from the hell.
The other writers featured in the issue include Tiina Laitila Kälvemark, Mikko Rimminen,Maritta Lintunen, Daniel Katz, Kari Hotakainen, Shimo Suntila, Joonas Konstig, Antti Tuuri, and Petri Tamminen.
The August issue also features a collection of new Ukrainian writing by Taras Antypovych,Sashko Ushkalov, and Tanya Malyarchuk, selected and introduced by literary critic and writer Oleksandr Mykhed.
