Oct 31 – Nov 6, 2011 Edition Wiley Files Suit Against Illegal Sharing
NEW YORK, NY/AUTHORLINK NEWS/ November 1, 2011–John Wiley & Sons is suing 27 John Does for illegally copying and distributing its For Dummies books. The copyright infringement suit was filed last week in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, against persons using Bit Torrent file sharing software. Wiley currently knows only the IP addresses and names of the information service providers for the John Does, Bbt the companys goal is to learn the names of the infringers so that they can be contacted to work out a settlement.
Wiley wants to educate and stop people from illegally copying its content, asking them to sign an agreement to stop the illegal action and to pay a small fee for the infringement. A company spokesman pointed out that Wiley has not actually sued anyone, as their identity is unknown, but the company has filed the complaint in order to hopefully learn the names of the infringers in the Bit Torrent environment.
Wiley says the losses from pirating are enormous. For example, the demonoid.me site downloaded Photoshop CS5 All-in-One-for Dummies more than 74,000 times since June 6, 2010.
The companys strategy against illegal sharing has four approaches: education and deterrence: legislative; enforcement and litigation; and seeking new business models to avoid business disruptions.
