Donald Rumsfeld

to Publish Memoirs

with Penguin’s Sentinel

NEW YORK, NY/4/14/2008–Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has agreed to write his memoirs for the Sentinel imprint of Penguin Group (USA) Inc., it was announced today by Adrian Zackheim, publisher of the Sentinel and Portfolio imprints. The arrangement for world rights was negotiated by Robert Barnett of the law firm Williams & Connolly.

Mr. Rumsfeld will forgo an advance and donate his net proceeds to the not-for-profit foundation he recently established to fund global microfinance efforts, to foster public service among promising young individuals through educational grants, to build linkages between the U.S. and Central Asia, and to encourage informed dialogue about today’s global challenges.

“This memoir will be essential reading for everyone who wants to understand the monumental events of Donald Rumsfeld’s six years at the Pentagon and his historic career,” said Mr. Zackheim. “The book will include previously untold stories and events, ranging from his youth during the Depression and World War II, to his time in Congress during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, to his service in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan Administrations. It will also cover his career in the private sector.”

The publication date for the currently untitled book has not yet been set. Jeffrey Krames will be the editor for Sentinel.

Donald Rumsfeld, 75, was both the youngest defense secretary in US history (under President Gerald R. Ford) and the oldest (under President George W. Bush). He was elected to four-terms in the US Congress from Illinois, and served as White House Chief of Staff, US Ambassador to NATO, Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East, and Chief Executive of two Fortune 500 companies, among a number of other prominent positions.
