MEMPHIS, TN/4/15/07–Barnes & Noble Inc. was to finish today shipping $3.5 million worth of books and gifts to American troops stationed overseas, after closing its 380,000-square-foot warehouse in Memphis. B&N, America’s largest bookseller, announced in March that it would close the Memphis distribution center at the end of April, laying off more than 200 employees.Cornerstone Systems Inc. of Memphis, is coordinating the shipping effort, along with Express America, which has volunteered to handle shipping from Memphis to the National Guard.

A total of 24 trailers were required to pick up books from Barnes & Noble’s warehouse at 6000 Freeport for delivery to the Army National Guard’s 164th Airlift Wing at 2815 Democrat. All companies participating in the shipment are donating their time and equipment, according to the Memphis-based news site, bizjournals.com.

As part of a major consolidation effort, Barnes & Noble will move distribution operations from Memphis to the company’s warehouses in New Jersey and Nevada.
