Love Local, Choose Indie Bookstores Over Amazon Prime

Bookshop.org  offered free shipping on June 21/22 to encourage customers to support local bookstores instead of Amazon during that weekend.

New York, 22 June. This Prime Day, Bookshop.org, the book buying platform that financially supports independent bookstores, encouraged book lovers to ‘love local’ and buy from your nearest local bookstore in person. However, if physically visiting a bookstore is not possible, you can continue supporting independent bookstores by buying through their store fronts at Bookshop.org.

When customers buy books from Bookshop.org, independent bookstores will always financially benefit.

As an alternative to Amazon’s Prime Day weekend, Bookshop.org happily offered customers a deal that they could feel good about. On June 21st and 22nd, Bookshop.org offered free shipping on every purchase. Bookstore lovers can save money while supporting local businesses and keeping their money in their communities, where it matters most.

Since launching in January 2020, Bookshop.org now supports over 1100 bookstores in the US. Through direct sales via the website, Bookshop.org has raised over $14 million on behalf of independent bookstores. The organization’s financial contributions have helped many stores stay open during the pandemic, and they hope to continue helping wherever they can.

Andy Hunter, C.E.O. of Bookshop.org, said “It is more important than ever to support indie bookstores, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. Recent estimates suggest that at the rate Amazon is growing, it could account for 80 percent of US book sales by 2025. That is an existential threat to the indie bookstores and booksellers we know and love.

“Now is the time to act. Make a conscious choice to buy at your local bookstore directly, or through Bookshop.org, and help keep bookstores in our lives and communities for years to come.”
