Baker Wins Indie Book Award
for Cancer Is A Bitch

MADISON, WI–Writer and breast cancer survivor Gail Konop Baker can add “award-winning author” in front of her name.

The Madison resident thought she had a compelling story to tell in her widely acclaimed “CANCER IS A BITCH, Or I’d Rather Be Having A Midlife Crisis (Perseus/De Capo Books). ” Now the book has been selected winner in the Memoir category of the Indie Excellence Awards 2009. Baker’s book was selected among five other finalists.

“As an Indie girl from way back, I am thrilled to win an Indie Book Award,” said Baker. “It’s gratifying to know my book and message reach people. Through it I have met so many people who said the book touched their lives. It’s been totally amazing. Now the book wins this award. It’s exciting and very humbling.”

CANCER IS A BITCH was released last fall and will be re-released in paperback in October. Baker’s account of her battle and victories with breast cancer has drawn praise from other cancer survivors, book publications and her fellow authors. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY said, “In this heartfelt memoir Baker proves to be both humorous and compassionate.”

Today the Madison resident is in demand for speaking engagements throughout the country.

The outgoing, energetic author maintains a busy lifestyle that includes writing, yoga, competing in marathons and enjoying her family.

Baker will be the guest speaker June 23 at the fund-raising gala COMICS AGAIN CANCER in Boston.
