New Partnership

With Epocrates

Hoboken, NJ/4/18/06—Global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced a new agreement with Epocrates, Inc., provider of mobile and web-based clinical applications, to make Wiley’s recently-acquired InfoPOEMs medical content available to Epocrates users. Under the terms of the agreement, Epocrates will integrate selected POEMs – daily summaries of the latest evidence-based medical research – into its free DocAlert® medical news service. DocAlert messages are distributed to the mobile devices of more than 500,000 healthcare professionals and help clinicians stay abreast of current information regarding clinical trials, drug withdrawals and study data. With the addition of InfoPOEMs’ content, the DocAlert service will further provide clinicians with important content to support decision-making at the point of care. “InfoPOEMs is a premier provider of evidence-based medical content summaries and Epocrates occupies a leadership position in mobile medical information,” said Greg Giblin, Director, HealthCare Solutions Group, North America, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. “This agreement brings together in partnership two firms with highly complementary strengths and enables a quarter of U.S. physicians to sample InfoPOEMs’ content.” Wiley announced its acquisition of InfoPOEM, Inc., a leading provider of evidence-based medical content and web-based search tools, in October 2005. The flagship services of InfoPOEMs – Daily POEMs and InfoRetriever – form the basis of a medical information management system that improves patient care and increases clinical efficiency. POEM is an acronym for “Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters.” POEMs are daily summaries of medical research filtered from over 100 leading peer-reviewed journals and graded for validity and relevance to patient outcomes. Approximately one in 40 eligible studies is converted into a POEM and each POEM is reviewed by at least 15 physicians and/or physician editors prior to publication. Clinicians at Epocrates will review all POEMs and select some for syndication via its DocAlert channel. The DocAlert service delivers relevant medical information each time clinicians sync their mobile devices to retrieve updated content from the Epocrates’ databases. Physicians receive targeted DocAlert messages in their area of practice, such as cardiology, emergency medicine, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and primary care. “Epocrates applications are developed by a team of practicing physicians and pharmacists using multiple clinical resources, including evidence-based guidelines and studies. By working with InfoPOEMs, we are providing an additional resource for evidence-based medicine through the Epocrates DocAlert channel with clinically relevant and valuable study summaries,” said Kirk Loevner, chairman and chief executive officer for Epocrates.
