LUNDENBURG, VT/4/9/08–The Steinhour Press, well-known full-service printer of illustrated books, is shutting down this month after fifty years in the business. The company was acquired in 2002 by CEO Warren Bingham and several investors, to save it from being shut down only four years after a multinational company acquired the family-owned business.
Additional funding from the buy helped revive the press, however, the company lacked the capital to upgrade to new equipment and sales slowed. Though the company had sought to sell during the past few years, no deals were made.
The press is locate din the Northeast Kingdom at Lundenburg, Vermont. It had specialized in museum-quality photography, art, and literary books and catalogues. Services included book design, typesetting, proofreading, imaging, digital photography, offset & letterpress printing, and edition bookbinding.
The company had 21 employees, but only eight remain to finish current jobs and close out the books, according to business manager Eric Huddleston. Huddleston said the closing should take only another few weeks.
