Intel Backs PBS NewsHour
Analyses of Economic Innovation

Arlington, VA – The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer announced today that the Intel Corporation, the world leader in silicon innovation and the leading global manufacturer of microprocessors, has become a corporate sponsor of the NewsHour broadcast on PBS and the Online NewsHour (www.pbs.org/newshour).  Intel’s support began on April 1, 2009 and will continue through December 2009.  Intel joins Chevron as a major corporate sponsor of the NewsHour.  Additional funding for the NewsHour is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, public television viewers, and a large roster of foundations, including, among others, the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Beyond providing general programming support, Intel will fund a series of mini-documentaries examining the role of innovation in the economy.  These segments will air throughout 2009 on the broadcast and online platforms of the NewsHour.  The NewsHour’s award-winning education, science & technology, and business, economic & finance reporting units will produce these reports without any editorial involvement from Intel.

Additionally, the NewsHour will partner with Intel and the Aspen Institute to create a series of salon dinners in Washington, DC focused on the Innovation Economy.  These events, whose guests will include local and national opinion leaders, will culminate with a  major summit  in October 2009.  At the summit, a select group of government, public policy and business leaders will gather to discuss the key ingredients needed to nurture and encourage the innovation necessary to power economic leadership.  The NewsHour will provide guidance on topics and guests, and NewsHour senior correspondents will lead and moderate conversations.

“We are delighted to partner with the NewsHour,” said Paul Bergevin, vice president, global communications, for Intel.  “The NewsHour is known for its intelligence and credibility and, due to the unique nature of its content, the NewsHour attracts an audience that aligns well with thought leaders.  There are many similarities to the way the NewsHour does its reporting and the way Intel approaches its business and we see a wonderful fit with our Innovation Economy initiative.”

“Intel’s support is a terrific endorsement of The NewsHour,” added Linda Winslow, executive producer of The NewsHour.  “We are devoting many resources toward our coverage of the economy and we are working to successfully extend the NewsHour onto new platforms.  Intel’s support will help us grow in new ways on-air, online and outside the studio, and partnering with Intel will also provide well-needed funds in these challenging times.”

Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, commented on the partnership that "the Aspen Institute is thrilled to be working with Intel and the News Hour, the best partners possible for envisioning the Innovation Economy."

The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer is seen five nights a week on more than 315 PBS stations across the country (check local listings) and is also available online, via public radio in select markets and via podcast.  The program is produced by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, in association with WETA, Washington, DC and Thirteen/WNET in New York.  Corporate funding for the NewsHour is provided by Chevron and Grant Thornton, with additional major funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers.
