NEW YORK,NY/03/10.2005Disney-owned Miramax Books, an imprint of Hyperion Books, will cease operations, and its backlist and front list inventory will be absorbed into Hyperion Books and Disney Publishing Worldwide. The move follows the departure of president Jonathan Burnham, who will become publisher at HarperCollins at the end of this month.
Burnham’s move left a second major vacancy this month at Miramax Books. Random House recently hired away Miramax’s senior acquisitions editor Susan Mercandetti.
Burnham is well-known and liked in the publishing world. He helped build Miramax to an output of more than 70 titles, including a number of bestsellers. Rumors are that Burnham may take several authors with him from Miramax to HarperCollins, possibly including Tim Russert.
Hyperion will try to relocate about 5 to 10 Miramax employees within the company. The division also includes ESPN Books, Theia, ABC Daytime Press, Hyperion Audiobooks and Hyperion East.
