International Acquires

Payne-Gallway

LONDON/01/11/2005—Harcourt Education International, the UK’s leading school and college publisher, has announced the acquisition of Payne-Gallway, the specialist IT school and college publisher. Harcourt is the educational division of Reed Elsevier Group plc.

Payne-Gallway was set up in Ipswich in 1998, by Pat and Oliver Heathcote, to publish IT and computing textbooks for schools and colleges. Payne-Gallway now publishes over eighty books and electronic resources to support ‘A ‘ level and GCSE IT and computing courses, vocational IT courses and IT skills development. With Pat’s teaching background, Payne-Gallway has established strong brand recognition in the UK schools market and is well known for its quality of writing, design, and match to exam specification.

Pat Heathcote, Managing Director, Payne-Gallway said “This is a fantastic opportunity for Payne-Gallway and its customers. The support of Harcourt’s editorial, marketing and production teams will enable us to expand our list of Computing and IT books to meet the ever-changing demands of new courses and specifications, while retaining the special quality for which we have become well-known. I look forward to the future development of our range with tremendous excitement and enthusiasm.”

Paul Shuter, Managing Director, Harcourt Education UK said “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Pat Heathcote and recognise the high quality of authorship and the perceptive understanding of teaching and learning of IT inherent in Payne-Gallway’s publishing. With the Government’s focus on 14-19 curriculum development, in particular the importance of developing student’s functional and academic IT capability, the acquisition of Payne-Gallway will enable us to grow more rapidly in both the school and college markets.”

Following acquisition, Harcourt Education will retain Payne-Gallway as an independent imprint, with all design, production and other publishing operations integrated into Harcourt Education’s Oxford-based business. Pat Heathcote will continue to write and will become Editor in Chief for Payne-Gallway’s future publishing. Customer orders and enquiries should continue to be sent to BEBC in Poole, Dorset under existing arrangements.
