Daniel Menaker
Executive Editor-in-Chief
NEW YORK, NY/05/25/2004Daniel Menaker, Senior Vice President of the Random House Publishing Group, has been appointed to the newly created position of Executive Editor-in-Chief, it was announced by Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of the Group. Previously Editor-in-Chief of the publishing divisions Random House imprints, Mr. Menaker will now oversee the editorial activities of the Groups Ballantine imprints as well in this new and broader capacity, reporting to Ms. Centrello. He also will continue an active role in acquiring and editing literary fiction and nonfiction.
Jonathan Karp, formerly Vice President, Editorial Director of the Random House imprints, has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Editor-in-Chief, reporting to Mr. Menaker. He will now oversee the editorial departments of Random House, Villard, Modern Library, and Random House Trade Paperbacks.
Nancy Miller will continue as Senior Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of the Ballantine imprints, and will add the title of Executive Editor, Random House Publishing Group, also reporting to Mr. Menaker. She will be responsible for the day to day supervision of the Ballantine, Del Rey, One World, and Presidio imprints. Both Mr. Karp and Ms. Miller will continue acquiring and editing their own lists of nonfiction and fiction.
Ms. Centrello said that these three appointments will focus the editorial leadership of the group while enabling each imprint to maintain its distinct profile. Under Mr. Menaker’s direction each of the Groups editors can acquire for any imprint and in any format. In close consultation with the authors and their agents, they will continue to determine the Group imprint most appropriate for each books readership and sales potential
Dan will be the architect of our editorial strategy, responsible for building and maintaining the divisions literary excellence, commented Ms. Centrello. Jon and Nancy will be responsible for spearheading acquisitions and managing the editorial staffs. I cant imagine a more impressive team to lead our talented editors and to enhance our tradition of distinguished and successful publishing.
Daniel Menaker began his twenty-six-year career at The New Yorker as a fact checker in l969, rising through the ranks to become a senior editor specializing in fiction. There he was the first person to publish such newcomers as Michael Cunningham, Michael Chabon, and Jennifer Egan, and he also worked with well-recognized authors such as Alice Munro, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Pauline Kael.
In l995 Mr. Menaker came to Random House as Vice President, Senior Literary Editor. The first novel he edited was the publishing phenomenon PRIMARY COLORS by Anonymous. In 2001 he became Executive Editor at Harper Collins, returning to Random House in 2003 as Editor-in-Chief of the Random House editorial imprints. He is currently working with such authors as Billy Collins, Richard North Patterson, Elizabeth Strout, Gary Shteyngart, and Tony Hendra, author of the new bestseller FATHER JOE: The Man Who Saved My Soul. He is the author of two books of short stories and a novel, THE TREATMENT, which was published by Knopf.
Jonathan Karp, a fifteen-year veteran of Random House, has edited some of the most widely read books of our time, including the #1 bestsellers SEABISCUIT, by Laura Hillenbrand, and WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE?, by Po Bronson. Among his other bestsellers are THE DANTE CLUB, by Matthew Pearl; FRANKLIN AND WINSTON, by Jon Meacham; HOW TO GET RICH, by Donald Trump; FAITH OF MY FATHERS, by Senator John McCain; and GRACE AND POWER, by Sally Bedell Smith.
Jon has also edited such writers as Mario Puzo, Molly Ivins, Kenneth Pollack, Susan Orlean and Christopher Buckley. Mr. Karp wrote the book and lyrics for the musical How to Save the World and Find True Love in 90 Minutes, which will premiere in August at The New York International Fringe Festival.
Nancy Miller came to Ballantine in 2000 as Senior Vice President, Editor-in- Chief. She was previously Director of Washington Square Press and Vice President, Senior Editor at Pocket Books. Before that, she held senior editorial positions at Addison-Wesley and Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and was a consulting editor at Walker & Company. At Ballantine she has edited such bestselling authors as Mark Kurlansky, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, Harvey Mackay, Michael Thompson, M.D., Gail Godwin and Pearl Cleage.
Random House Executive Editors Kate Medina and Bob Loomis, as well as Linda Marrow, Vice President, Editorial Director, Ballantine, will continue to report to Ms. Centrello.
