With Appreciation Week

ANN ARBOR, MI/03/16/09-Borders® and Waldenbooks® stores across the country will host Educator Appreciation Week March 19 through March 25 to honor current and retired educators for their commitment to sharing knowledge and encouraging life-long learning. Throughout the seven-day event, educators will receive a 25 percent discount off regular-priced books, CDs, DVDs, gift and stationery and cafe items for use in their classrooms or for their personal enjoyment. In addition to providing a discount for teachers, stores will also host the following activities during Educator Appreciation Week:

Special Reception for Educators, Friday, March 20 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. During this special reception, educators can talk with the expert staff at their local Borders store about book options for their personal entertainment and for classroom use, as well as titles that will help them grow and advance professionally. Teachers are encouraged to bring in their reading lists and likewise, store staff will share a list of recommended titles for teachers to consider adding to their collections. In addition, educators can sample delicious treats at the reception and enter to win a gift basket filled with goodies. “Twilight” DVD Midnight Release Party, Friday, March 20 from 10 p.m. until midnight. Spend your evening at Borders first by attending the special reception for educators and then stay on for the “Twilight” DVD midnight release party happening at most Borders stores. Educators who want to cast a ballot for the movie awards can visit, download and complete the ballot and bring it with them to the store Friday night. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Kids Event, Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. Educators are encouraged to spend Saturday afternoon shopping at their local Borders stores where they can also celebrate the 40th anniversary of Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” picture book. Kids can enjoy an event that includes “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” storytime activity, art project as well as other activities, and educators can enjoy 25 percent off the regular price of all of Eric Carle’s titles including the new pop-up edition of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

Educator Appreciation Week is open to current and retired PreK-12 teachers, librarians, principals, homeschoolers, professors, student teachers, religious educators, school support staff and other educators. Please bring a current Classroom or Educator Discount card, school ID or pay stub to be eligible to receive the special discounts.

Borders Group’s Educator Appreciation Week savings event could not come at a better time for teachers, as an increasing number are purchasing supplies for their classrooms with their own money. According to a 2008 national survey on educator buying trends, surveyed teachers, on average, spent nearly $400 of their own money during the 2007-2008 school year for school supplies and instructional materials. Through this event, Borders helps make purchases more affordable for local educators and connects them with the expert staff at their local Borders stores.

Certain restrictions apply to the 25 percent discount offered during Educator Appreciation Week. For more details, please see our Web site at or our Spanish-language page at
