Book Industry Commits
to Aggressive Climate Goals

The Book Industry Environmental Council (BIEC), in a web/phone conference set at 1 p.m.EDT April 16, will announced details of its aggressive long-term program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions-a global first in publishing. When the goals of the BIEC are achieved for the U.S. book industry, approximately 2.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions will be avoided annually; equivalent to removing 450,000 cars from the roads, the BIEC says.

The BIEC is coordinated by nonprofits Green Press Initiative and the Book Industry Study Group and has representation from a broad group of book industry stakeholders including publishers, printers, paper manufacturers and retailers. Representatives from Green Press Initiative, the Book Industry Study Group, and Hachette Book Group, which chaired the climate committee of the BIEC, will provide an overview of the greenhouse gas reduction goals established by the BIEC and will be available for questions from the press.
