Guggenheim
NEW YORK, NY/7/24/06—Andre Bernard, longtime publisher and vice president of Harcourt Publishing, is leaving in early August to become vice president of the Guggenheim Foundation. For the time being, Harcourt’s editor-in-chief and associate publisher Rebecca Saletan will act as publisher.
Andre Bernard has been in the publishing industry for more than 20 years.
Bernard began his publishing career at Viking Penguin and held editorial positions at David Godine and Touchstone/Simon & Schuster. In 1996 he joined Harcourt as executive editor from his position as director of acquisitions at Book-of-the-Month Club. As editor-in-chief of Harvest Books, and more recently at Harcourt, Bernard has worked with such writers as George Plimpton, Alice Walker, Edward Hirsch, Shyam Selvadurai, and poet Richard Wilbur.
Bernard is also a seasoned critic, frequently reviewing books for the New York Observer; and since 1997, a regular columnist for The American Scholar. He has written several bestselling books.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by United States Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son who died April 26, 1922. The Foundation offers Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts.
