Baron Leaves

Putnam Presidency,

Kennedy Takes Over

NEW YORK, NY/02/18/05—Carole Baron, president of G.P. Putnam’s Sons and Dutton, both divisions of Penguin Group (USA), is leaving the company. Susan Petersen Kennedy, current president of Penguin Group (USA) will manage the Putnam and Dutton imprints for the time being, and Brian Tart will assume the Dutton unit presidency.

Baron was promoted as the Putnam head to fill the chair vacated by publishing icon Phyllis Grann, who left in September 2001 after a 25-year career at Penguin, owned by Pearson.

Baron, prior to joining Penguin’s Dutton imprint in 1999, had served as president and publisher of Dell/Delacorte, now a division of Random House, Inc.

Baron issued a statement saying it was time for her to let go of the day-to-day detail and to take a look at the larger picture of the publishing industry.
