December 1-15, 2003 Edition BAM Boosts Quarterly

Sales by 6.6 Percent

11/19/03—Books-A-Million has reported a 6.6 percent increase in third quarter sales ending November 1 to $103.1 million. Comparable store sales rose 4.4 percent, and the company reduced net losses from $2.7 million in the same period last year to $755,000 this period.

BAM chairman Clyde Anderson attributed the improved performance to an excellent list of titles, including such hot sellers as The South Beach Diet and The Purpose Driven Life in nonfiction, and The Wedding, Bleachers and The Da Vinci Code in fiction.

Anderson also predicts a strong fourth quarter due to continuing sales of books released in the third quarter along with new releases for the fourth quarter.
