April 15-30, 2004 Edition BOOK DEALS More Small
Book Stores
Close Doors
4/9/04—Several more established bookstores closed their doors by the end of the first quarter of 2004. Main Street Bookshop in White Plains, NY sold its building and was scheduled to close its doors at the end of April 2004. Owner Joshua Makanoff will continue operating a separate book fair which serves the tri-state area. The store closed largely because it cannot compete against Barnes & Noble, which is opening a $325 million City Center next to the small independent store.
Meanwhile, in Dallas, Texas, Black Images Book Bazaar, an African-American bookstore in operation since 1977, will close next year when its lease expires, owner Emma Rodgers told the Fort worth Star-Telegram.
Declining sales and the overall downturn in the economy have forced the 27-year-old bookstore to finally close its doors.
