NEW YORK, NY/JULY 5,2011–Amazon has made an offer to buy The Book Depository, a competitive bookseller in the UK and Australia. The deal must first be examined by the Office of Fair Trading in the UK for any “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK.

Amazon and The Book Depository have not yet issued a formal statement about the acquisition, but the Book Depository said on its web stie: “The Book Depository and Amazon are aligned in wanting to ensure the best possible experience for customers. Working with Amazon we will look to continue to increase our vast selection of great titles and provide even better customer experience.”
