The most critical question for an agent is whether he or she can sell the work to an editor or publishing house. The editor, in turn, will ask the same question before making an offer. In other words, is there a market for the story. Does the agent know the right editor or publisher who might be interested ? Can the editor and team reach a large enough audience to make a return on the investment?

For all the dreams you have as a writer, you may improve your publishing chances by thinking of yourself as “the product.” The quality of the writing and presentation do figure into the deal, along with other factors.

Unfortunately, for us writers, marketability beats creativity.

Keep writing, and never give up.
