Partnership with Institute
of Chemical EngineersHoboken, NJ/03/21/05Global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) today announced that they have signed a multi-year agreement to jointly publish books in chemical engineering and industrial chemistry under a new, co-branded imprint, effective April 2005.
Under the agreement, Wiley and AIChE will co-publish 10-15 books a year in the broad field of chemical engineering, including books in process safety and emerging technological areas like biological engineering and sustainability. Wiley will oversee the publishing services for these books including production, marketing, and distribution worldwide. AIChE will retain editorial control of the titles.
This is the second publishing agreement between Wiley and AIChE. In January 2004, Wiley assumed all publishing responsibilities for the Institute’s three flagship journalsEnvironmental Progress, Process Safety Progress, and the AIChE Journal including the publication of their online editions through Wiley InterScience ( http://www.interscience.wiley.com), the company’s online publishing platform. AIChE retained editorial control of the journals.
“Wiley is delighted to be extending our relationship with AIChE,” said Janet Bailey, Vice President of Scientific, Technical and Medical Books and Reference Works, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. “By combining AIChE’s status as a global leader in the chemical engineering profession with Wiley’s recognized brand and knowledge of the market, we can ensure that must-have content is reaching AIChE members and the larger chemical engineering and industrial chemistry communities. This partnership further demonstrates Wiley’s commitment to expanding its publishing programs in the fields of chemical engineering, process safety, biotechnology, occupational and environmental health and safety, risk analysis and management, and engineering design.”
“Building on the success of our partnership in journal publishing, AIChE has joined forces with Wiley to strengthen and expand its book publishing program,” noted Dr. John A. Sofranko, American Institute of Chemical Engineers Executive Director. “We’re especially excited because we’ll be able to offer our members, who will continue to benefit from special member discounts, access to significantly expanded content.”
Also effective with this agreement, Wiley will distribute approximately 70 backlist titles published by AIChE, including the best-selling titles Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Procedures, Second Edition; Dow’s Fire & Explosion Index Hazard Classification Guide; Guidelines for Fire Protection in Chemical, Petrochemical and Hydrocarbon Processing Facilities; Guidelines for Design Solutions to Process Equipment Failures; Understanding Explosions; Layer of Protection Analysis: Simplified Process Risk Assessment; and Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids.
“Wiley’s marketing and sales resources will help us better achieve our mission of getting superior technical information to the widest possible audience,” continued Sofranko. “Through this partnership, we look forward to reaching more people, especially internationally, with important chemical engineering, process safety, biological engineering, sustainability and new technology information.”

About the American Institute of Chemical Engineers
Founded in the United States in 1908, AIChE is a professional association of more than 40,000 chemical engineers in 92 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities and government using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society.
Governed by volunteer leaders, the Institute serves its members by aiding their professional growth and fostering the dissemination of scientific knowledge through the development of award-winning publications and world-class conferences. AIChE also has been the incubator and ongoing supporter of three national, high-tech knowledge centers: the Society for Biological Engineering, the Center for Chemical Process Safety and the Institute for Sustainability. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontier of chemical engineering research in such areas as nanotechnology, sustainability, hydrogen fuels, biological and environmental engineering, and chemical plant safety and security.
