Oct 18 – Oct 24, 2010 Edition Sterling to Launch New Young Adult Imprint

New York, NY/Authorlink News/October 20, 2010– Sterling Children’s Books announced today that the company will launch a new imprint called Splinter and will begin publishing fiction for teen readers in January 2011. Splinter’s list will include multiple genres and publish across print, digital, mobile, and multimedia platforms. Splinter will offer books that are grounded in teen truths, grow new ideas, and break away from the everyday.

“Splinter will publish books that reflect the fresh, offbeat, limitless ways in which teens view the world—stories that are authentic to the experiences, cares, anxieties, and dreams of today’s young people,” says Frances Gilbert, VP, Publisher of Sterling Children’s Books.

Splinter’s initial list publishes in January 2011 with TIGER’S CURSE, the first in a multi-book fantasy-romance saga by debut novelist Colleen Houck. A first printing of 250,000 is planned and the series has already been optioned for feature film development.

Splinter plans to roll out three Tiger novels in 2011: TIGER’S CURSE (1/11/11), TIGER’S QUEST (6/1/11), and TIGER’S VOYAGE (11/1/11)—simultaneously in hardcover and eBook formats—eschewing the traditional publishing model of publishing one book each year. Splinter’s ambitious, $250,000 TIGER marketing campaign includes digital teaser chapters; book trailers; a dedicated interactive website featuring quizzes, trivia, music playlists, sweepstakes, and exclusive “behind the scenes” material; and “More in Store” features at Barnes & Noble. Splinter will also embed special TAG codes on the books so that anyone with a Smart phone can instantly access web-only features and content.

Marcus Leaver, President of Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., commented, “In this fast-paced digital age, it is extremely exciting for Splinter to offer Colleen’s incredible Tiger novels to readers when they want it, in whatever format they want to read it on. Today’s teens don’t want to wait a full year for a sequel, and why should they? We intend to do everything possible to fulfill their reading expectations. We firmly believe that enthusiasm for the Tiger Saga will extend far beyond 2011—and our creative publishing strategy is just a taste of more great things to come from Splinter.” Future titles on Splinter’s boutique list will focus on gripping and relevant storytelling from popular young adult writers, established authors currently working outside of this field, and brand new voices. Splinter will also publish uniquely repackaged classic novels with a stylish approach designed to appeal to today’s teen readers.
