Simon & Schuster,
Valerie Plame Wilson
File Suit Against CIA

NEW YORK, NY/5/31/07-Earlier today Simon & Schuster, together with Valerie Plame Wilson, filed suit in U.S. District Court/Southern District of New York Court against J. Michael McConnell, Director of National Intelligence; the Central Intelligence Agency; and Michael V. Hayden, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Simon & Schuster and Valerie Plame Wilson believe that the Executive Branch of the United States government is unconstitutionally interfering with the publication of Ms. Wilson’s memoir, Fair Game by classifying public domain information. The CIA maintains that the information the dates of Valerie Wilson’s federal service which has been previously released by the CIA itself in an unclassified document and can be found in the Congressional Record and on the worldwide web (www.gpoaccess.gov), is nevertheless classified.

Simon & Schuster stated: “The CIA’s effort to classify public domain information is an unreasonable attempt at prior restraint of publication, and a violation of our First Amendment rights. We have filed our suit in the belief that the CIA’s actions have implications that are much broader than this particular case, and that could have a chilling effect on the nature of public discourse in a free society.”
