Interior Design Book

NEW YORK/NY/O3/01/04—Hyperion will publish a new book by Nate Berkus, entitled HOME RULES in October 2004. The home decorating book will provide Berkus’ philosophy for great decorating with suggestions, tips, and makeover ideas.

As one of Chicago’s preeminent decorators, with a growing momentum on the national landscape, Berkus is best known for his regular appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He has been named Chicago Social magazine’s design editor, House Beautiful’s “Next Wave in Design Talent,” and Crain’s Business magazine’s “40 under 40 to Watch in 2004.” He’s also among People Magazine‘s Sexiest Men of 2003. He started Nate Berkus Associates in 1995 and has since designed Chicago area lofts, condominiums, and prestigious homes as well as select design projects for Barney’s New York and a complete redesign of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. He lives in Chicago.

The announcement was made by Hyperion editor-in-chief, Will Schwalbe. Of the acquisition Schwalbe said: “Nate Berkus is an astonishingly creative new talent in the world of interiors. He gives seriously brilliant advice but manages to make it all so easy that people can finally make the changes to their rooms that before they only dreamed about. He has an incredible gift for making great design affordable and effortless and fun.”

Of the deal Berkus said: “I am so excited about the book and the opportunity to present my ideas on design in this medium. With Will Schwalbe’s direction and Hyperion’s unending knowledge, I know that we are creating something that we will be proud of for a long time to come.”

Will Schwalbe negotiated the deal with Michael Broussard of the Dupree Miller Agency. Executive editor Mary Ellen O’Neill will be the editor for the book. Hyperion retains first serial, foreign, book club, and audio rights.

Hyperion, which was founded in 1991, publishes general-interest fiction and non-fiction hardcover, trade, and mass-market paperback books for adults and includes the Miramax, ESPN Books, ABC Daytime Press, Hyperion East, Theia, and Hyperion AudioBooks imprints. Hyperion is the adult trade book publishing unit of ABC, Inc.
