GOLDEN, CO/7/23/07–Speck Press, a tiny independent publisher in Denver, has been acquired by Colorado-based Fulcrum Publishing. The news was announced by Fulcrm Publisher Sam Scinta this week, who said the deal will add about 20 existing fiction and nonfiction titles to the Fulcrum list and increase output by about 3-5 titles per year.

"The motivation for the acquisition was to expand into a new area," said Scinta. " We are currently revamping all of Fulcrum’s acquisition process, due to other organizational considerations, making it much more inclusive as a result. The acquisition of Speck complements Fulcrum’s current publishing and acquisitions programs, and as such, will only add to and expand our current output of books."

Speck’s founder Derek Lawrence will join Fulcrum in September as associate publisher and Susan Hill Newton, formerly a Speck editor, joined Fulcrum today (July 23, 2007). Publisher Scinta will head the book acquisitions team with Lawrence and Newton as part of the editorial team.

In addition, Fulcrum has added three other new staff members, including Karen Iker, formerly with Brookings Institution Press, as direct and special markets coordinator; Melissa Ramey, who is returning to the company as sub rights manager; and Susan Tangen as special and direct sales manager for lifestyle and outdoor books. Ms. Tangen comes to Fulcrum from Powell’s Books.

Speck Press has been an independent press exploring cultures and sub cultures through nonfiction and crime fiction books. They have published about six titles per year.

Fulcrum is a forward-thinking publishing house with a unique acquisitions process which requires the entire staff to propose ideas and review manuscripts. The independent publisher has a reputation for providing personalized service and for acting quickly to industry trends, publishing authors who might not have received a voice before and helping them sell more aggressively.

Fulcrum publishes in the areas of environment and nature, history, gardening, memoirs, health and children’s books. The company has no plans to acquire additional companies in the near future.
