February 1-15, 2005 Edition PEOPLE ALA-Freedom-to-Read Leader Dies

WASHINGTON, DC/ 01/24/05—The Association of American Publishers joined colleagues in the library community and free speech advocates everywhere in mourning the death of Gordon Conable, President of the American Library Association-affiliated Freedom to Read Foundation, who died at his home in California earlier this month. He was, AAP President Pat Schroeder said, “a real First Amendment hero.”

Clarke’s Leadership Expanded at Reader’s Digest

Pleasantville, NY/ 01/24/05—Harold Clarke, head of Readers’ Digest’s trade publishing division, has now been named president and publisher of Reader’s Digest Books and Music division, which includes most of RD’s retail book units, direct mail and music. The announcement was made by Eric Schrier, president of RD North America and global editor-in-chief.
