July 18 – July 24, 2011 Edition Digital Sales Up 146.9% in May

NEW YORK, NY/AUTHORLINK NEWS/JULY 21, 2011–The Association of American Publishers today reported that sales for all major adult print segments—hardcover, paperback and mass market—declined in May.

E-books, however, continued their steep climb, increasing 146.9% for the month on sales of $73.4 million. For the calendar year, e-books generated $389.7 million in sales, a 160.1% jump over the same period 2010.

Meanwhile, adult hardcovers dropped 38.2%, adult paperbacks dropped 14.3%, and adult mass market fell 39.4%.

The few bright spots for the month, on the print side, came from YA paperbacks, which saw an increase of 4.7% for the month; university press paperbacks, up 3.4% and religion books, which rose 21.6%.
