July 19 – July 25, 2010 Edition BN Android App Coming Soon
AUTHORLINK NEWS/July 19, 2010–Barnes & Noble will soon release an app for Googles Android software platform, according to the blog Andronica. Following Amazon and Borders lead in releasing applications for Android, Barnes & Noble sent a general e-mail message to some staff members saying that its B&N eReader app will soon arrive on Android. That means writers and independent publishers will have yet another way to reach eBook buyers by placing their eBooks with retailers who offer titles that will run on Android-powered reading devices.
Android is an open source operating system, written and sponsored by Google, that powers mobile devices, like cellular phones, tablet computers and netbooks. Android delivers a complete set of software for mobile devices: an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. The system was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer.
Currently, Android has proven to be a very popular operating system among device manufacturers like HTC, Motorola and Samsung, due to its low cost, flexibility and powerful feature set. The rapidly increasing uptake of Android among device manufacturers has led to a large number of Android devices hitting the market, and subsequent rapid rise in Android’s mobile market share.
Realizing that people dont want to purchase a number of devices to read eBooks, large retailers are scrambling to develop applications that will work on a broader range of devices, such as those that work on the Android operating system.
A B&N eReader app will no doubt be appealing to consumers who may not want to invest in BNs nook, or other reading devices.
