Penguin expects to produce 50 titles, all of which will be endorsed by a panel of 12 well-known historians, led by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Scott Moyers will be editor of the series.
The titles will be published as part of the “Penguin History of American Life” project. Prospective authors must earn the endorsement of all 12 historians to be accepted for publication.
Among the first titles approved are a book about post-Civil War reconstruction in the north, the “Camp Grant” massacre of native Americans, a cultural history book about the Great Depression, and the history of connections between black Americans and Africa. The first titles will be released in 2005, but Editor Moyers says the 50-book projectd may take a decade to complete.
