New York, NY/AUTHORLINK NEWS/March 22, 2011—Elizabeth Kostova, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Historian and The Swan Thieves, will join the Random House Publishing Group to be published by Ballantine Bantam Dell. The publisher acquired North American hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book publication rights for a new novel from Amy Williams of McCormick & Williams, the author's agent. Terms were not disclosed. The announcement was made today by Libby McGuire, Publisher for Ballantine Bantam Dell, who said, "Elizabeth Kostova writes uniquely powerful, haunting, and gripping novels. We are utterly thrilled to have the opportunity to bring her to Ballantine Bantam Dell.”

The Historian, published in June 2005, became the first debut novel to land immediately at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and at the time was the fastest-selling hardcover debut novel in US history. More than 1.7 million copies of Kostova’s works have been sold in North America and her novels have been translated in 40 languages. Kostova said of her move, “I'm very pleased to be working with this excellent team, and honored to join Random House's wonderful publishing history.”

The novel will be edited by Jennifer Hershey, Editor-in-Chief, Ballantine Bantam Dell and is scheduled to be published simultaneously as a Ballantine hardcover and e-book edition in 2013. Ms. Hershey said, "Elizabeth is a huge talent whose work represents our favorite kind of writing: stylistic sophistication combined with riveting storytelling." The new novel will be set in the U.S. and Eastern Europe, and like The Historian will move between past and present, and combine elements of suspense, myth and folklore.

The Random House Publishing Group is a division of Random House, the world's largest trade-book publisher, whose parent company is Bertelsmann AG.
