Press May Be Saved

By UPNE Consortium

BOSTON, MA/12/08/04—Northeastern University Press, which had planned to go out of business by the end of 2004, now has a second chance to survive by having joined a consortium.

NUP has become part of The University Press of New England consortium, based in in Lebanon,N.H. The organization now includes the University of Vermont, Brandies University, University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College and Tufts University.

Since the UPNE handles all of the publishing activities for the consortium, Northwestern will no longer need its offices. Instead it will work through the consortium, and will reduce its output from 35 books to 15 per year. The press will also be able to keep its backlist of 400 titles, and will release four new titles this spring.

Northeastern University Press publishes general trade and scholarly titles in the areas of American History, New England Studies, Criminal Justice, Law and Society, Political Science, American Studies, Women’s Studies, African American Literature, and Music. The Press also distributes selected publications of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
