Jane Brody to Join
Random House for Major
Book on the End of Life NEW YORK, NY/8/16/2006—Nancy Miller, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor of Random House, has pre-empted North American rights for the Random House Publishing Group from agent Wendy Weil to JANE BRODY’S GUIDE TO THE GREAT BEYOND—the bestselling New York Times columnist’s long-awaited major new book, her first in over a decade, in which she offers a broad, practical “personal health” approach to the one certainty in each life: that sooner or later it will end.

Drawn to this subject by the overwhelming response she received from readers every time she wrote a column that touched upon it, Brody came to realize that she could help people to reach a level of comfort with this daunting subject by arming them with knowledge about how to prepare, how to manage the care of someone who is dying, and ultimately how to create the conditions for a “good death.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Jane Brody to the Random House Publishing Group,” said Nancy Miller. “No other book on this subject has Brody’s trademark consumer-oriented, human interest approach, which will show baby boomers and their aging parents entering the high-risk years how to better face their mortality.”

Through real-life anecdotes, the latest research, and interviews with leaders in the field, Jane Brody will define a “good death”; explain the value of living wills and health care proxies; show what happens, physically and mentally, to a person when death is near; detail what sorts of interventions are helpful, and which (most) are not; describe the nature and importance of palliative care; and give readers the ammunition they need to assure that they and their loved ones are treated with dignity when the end of life is near.

Jane Brody joined The New York Times as science and health writer in 1965. She has been the Personal Health columnist for the Times since 1976. Her bestselling books include Jane Brody’s Nutrition Book and Jane Brody’s Good Food Book. Publication of her new book is anticipated in 2008.
