NEW YORK, NY/10/23/206—Tracy Carns, former associate publisher of Reganbooks/Harpercollins and earlier the publishing director of Overlook Press, has started her own publishing company, The Rookery Press.
The new company will publish serious nonfiction, some literary fiction, reprints, and illustrated books. Carns is sharing offices in Soho with former employer, Overlook, which is also Rookery’s distributor. The new company will release its first book, an essay, On Love and Death by Patrick Süskind in late November. The Suskind book is timed with the debut of the movie Perfume (Dreamworks) based on Süskind’s bestselling novel by the same name. The film, staring Dustin Hoffman, is a story of murder and obsession set in 18th-Century France. Tom Tywer is directing the film, to be released in December in New York. Carns’s full book list will be published in summer 2007, followed by about 20 titles annually.
At Overlook Tracy Carns worked with such authors as David Mamet, Richard Grant, Neil LaBute, and Carol Drinkwater. The Overlook Press is an independent general-interest publisher, founded in 1971. The publishing program consists of nearly 100 new books per year, evenly divided between hardcovers and trade paperbacks. The eclectic list includes fiction, history, biography, drama, and design. Rookery is expected to have a similar serious focus.
