A hit in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C., C. S. Lewis Onstage: The Most Reluctant Convert makes its Dallas premiere at the Eisemann Center in Richardson September 27 through October 8. The play is produced by New York City-based Fellowship for Performing Arts, which previously brought The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce to Dallas.
Awarding-winning actor Max McLean presents his acclaimed portrayal of C.S. Lewis in The Most Reluctant Convert, which is adapted exclusively from Lewis’ writings. The play follows Lewis’ journey from the death of his mother as a small boy through his estranged relationship with his father and to the “ghastly” experience of being in the trenches of World War I. These events helped form his deeply ingrained atheism.
Through interactions with figures such as J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton and George MacDonald, Lewis underwent an unwilling conversion from vigorous debunker of all religions to a vibrant and influential Christian intellectual. The Most Reluctant Convert takes audiences on Lewis’ entertaining journey from unbridled skepticism to exhilarating joy.
McLean’s performance, adorned with generous doses of Lewis’ sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, was described as “uncannily spot-on!” by TheaterMania. The Chicago Sun-Times called it “Highly Entertaining!” And The Weekly Standard said it is “a smart production…that delivers something truly novel in modern theater: a story about an immensely creative mind arriving at the threshold of faith.”
A brilliant academic and beloved, renowned author, Lewis wrote more than 30 books that have sold more than 200 million copies, making him arguably the most influential religious writer of the past century.
