Bookstore Sales Drop Less Than Other Retailers

WASHINGTON, D.C (Authorlink News, September 16, 2009)–Bookstore sales for the month of July 2009 fell 0.5% compared to the same period a year ago to $1.11billion, the U.S. Census Bureau preliminarily reported.  For the first seven months of the year, sales fell 2.5% to $8.74 billion. Booksellers fared better this year than other retailers. Retailers overall struggled with declines of 0.5% in July and of 9.5% for the January-July period.

In 2008, bookstore sales for July totaled $1.12 billion for the month, and $8.80 billion for the first seven months.
