S&S Shows

13 Percent Gain

in Adult Hardcover

NEW YORK, NY/07/22/04—Simon & Schuster this month showed an overall gain in sales of 10 percent for the first six months of 2004, including a 13 percent boost in adult hardcover publishing. The company also posted a healthy gain in profits for the second quarter.

S&S CEO Jack Romanos attributed the increases partly to continuing strong growth for Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons, with more than one million hardcover copies in print, and to political books such as Plan of Attack. Trade paperback sales were down slightly. Industry experts blame the paperback slump on the growth in availability of used books.

Despite the impact of the presidential election and the Olympics, S&S predicts a strong second half of 2004.
