February 1-15, 2004 Edition PEOPLE Penguin Names Newman to New Publishing Post
NEW YORK, NY/1/16/04—Megan Newman, formerly editorial director for HarperResource, has joined The Penguin Group in the newly-created role of publisher for the Avery Books and Viking Studio lines. Newman also will be an advisor to Penguin president and publisher Kathryn Court on growing the publisher’s reference line.
Kate Stark, HarperResource’s director of marketing, has also been hired away to Penguin as associate publisher.
Avery publisher John Duff will no longer manage the imprint, but will continue to oversee the Perigee imprint. Adrian Zackheim, publisher of Portfolio and Sentinel, had been managing Viking Studio in the interim until the two new staff members came on board.
In another change at Penguin, Tracy Tang, president and publisher of Penguin’s Puffin Books is leaving in February to spend more time with her family.
Jacobs Leaves Scholastic
NEW YORK, NY/1/17/04—Michael Jacobs, head of Scholastic’s trade publishing division, is leaving the company after his six-year stay at the house, where he managed publication of all five Harry Potter books.
Before joining Scholastic, Jacobs was president of Viking Penguin and publisher of Free Press. Barbara Marcus, president of Scholastic’s book publishing and distribution group, will direct the Scholastic trade unit until a successor is named. Ellie Berger, vice president and deputy publisher of licensed books, will manage daily operations and marketing with the title, acting general manager. Jean Feiwel continues to manage editorial operations.
