Steinberger Named CEO of Perseus Books,

McKeown Moves to Vice Chairmanship

NEW YORK, NY/01/12/2004—David Steinberger has left his post as president of HarperCollins, to become CEO at Perseus Book Group, succeeding Jack McKeown who will now serve as vice chairman. Steinberger, whose appointment became effective immediately, will report to Frank Pearl, chairman of the Perseus LLC board.

McKeown also reports directly to the board where he will be responsible for acquisitions and strategic matters.

Steinberger was quoted in Publishers Weekly as saying that his mission is to “create a great publishing company. The mandate has always been to publish books of quality and unique books that are differentiated and special and nurture the creative energy in these different publishing companies and still get the benefits of scale.” The company will be looking for targeted, distinct audiences, rather than mass market readers, and also will likely focus on titles that lend themselves well to Internet marketing, in which Steinberger has a strong background.

Perseus may also will be looking to acquire other companies overseas and in the area of children’s publishing.
