Random House Books Take Six ALA Children’s Awards

BOSTON, MASS./AUTHORLINK NEWS/January 19, 2010—Random House carried home six top awards yesterday in the American Library Association’s 2010 Youth Media Awards. Winners of the Caldecott and Newbery awards were announced at the ALA’s conference in Boston.   

Random House titles receiving awards and honors were:  

WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead, published by Wendy Lamb Books, receives the John Newbery Medal. WHEN YOU REACH ME is an exquisitely crafted and timeless tale about one girl’s search to find meaning from a series of mysterious messages. The New York Times bestselling novel has received an impressive 5 starred reviews. It was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2009. WHEN YOU REACH ME garnered 2009 Best Book of the Year citations from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Horn Book Magazine, and Booklist. The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The novel was edited by Wendy Lamb, Vice-President and Publishing Director, Wendy Lamb Books.

GOING BOVINE by Libba Bray, published by Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers wins the Michael L. Printz Award. Bray chronicles the absurdist, dark comedic journey of Cameron Smith, a disaffected sixteen-year-old who, after being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (commonly known as mad cow disease), sets off on a road trip to find a cure and possibly save the world. The Michael L. Printz Award honors a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. Bray’s book was edited by Wendy Loggia, Executive Director, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers.

A FARAWAY ISLAND by Annika Thor, published by Delacorte Press, receives the Mildred. L. Batchelder Award. Set in Sweden during World War II, A FARAWAY ISLAND is a moving novel about war, displacement, and the universal joys and sorrows of growing up. A bestseller in its native Sweden, A FARAWAY ISLAND received a starred review from Booklist. The Mildred L. Batchelder Award is a honor awarded to an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those originally published in a foreign language.  A FARAWAY ISLAND was edited by Francoise Bui, Executive Director, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers.

RETURN TO SENDER by Julia Alvarez, published by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers wins the Pura Belpré Award, an award presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. RETURN TO SENDER is a thought-provoking and touching story about immigration and the lives it affects.  Award-winning Alvarez captures the raw emotion surrounding this timely and difficult subject matter in an accessible way by telling the story through the questioning innocence of children.  Alvarez’s book was edited by Erin Clarke, Senior Editor, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers.

MARE’S WAR by Tanita S. Davis, published by Alfred A. Knopf, is named a Coretta Scott King Honor book. Rich in historical detail and the dynamics of family ties, the novel follows two sisters, their larger-than-life grandmother and the tales she tells of her time as a WAC member, while they take a summer road trip. MARE’S WAR was named a Kirkus Reviews Best Young Adult Book of 2009. The Coretta Scott King Book Awards recognize outstanding books for young adults and children by African-American authors and illustrators that reflect the African-American experience. MARE’S WAR was edited by Erin Clarke, Senior Editor. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers.
